My Students
A typical day in my class is a whirlwind to say the least. 125 middle school students pass through my classroom to learn about science. Students love hands on learning and experiments, however their area of weakness is in comprehending informational text, we are in great need of short content books.
My students are eager to learn and I believe they all love science.
Some, prefer the biology aspect, others the chemistry, other the engineering. My students are very diverse. I service general education, below level readers, gifted students, special education student, and English language learners. I teach them all, and at the same time. Their learning levels vary and it requires a great amount of resources so that I can build varied lessons for students by group. Middle school students are high energy, and at this age level, their interest in reading declines. A book must be extremely interesting to keep them engaged. They are also environmentally conscious. They have established and enforced recycling throughout the school. They organized an energy savings campaign in which they won the Midwest green cup challenge. They take part in three stewardship organizations to take environmental action, they teach what they learn to the lower grades regularly.
My Project
Achievement gap is a major issue in the United States and I am seeing a pattern in my own students in the achievement of reading. My colleagues and I have been working effortlessly to raise the success of our students reading levels.
If provided the listed titles, I will be able to begin independent reading as a 15 minute a day do now. I selected science informational texts at varied levels in order to scaffold my students to higher reading levels than they are currently at. While my school is 100% free lunch, I see high potential with the right strategies, materials and rigorous expectations. A recent study showed that despite achievement gap, a low income student will perform better than a disengaged student of any social class. The titles are varied that I have topics to engage all learners.
It has been said it takes a village to raise a child.
I see hope for the future of America in young students. These materials will provide daily reading instruction for students in science. Science relates to all aspects of the everyday world, and reading is most necessary for both academic success and in developing life skills. Lets work together to ensure a bright future for the next generation by supporting their reading development right now!
