My Students

A typical day in my (14+1+1)self-contained classroom for students with special needs can be demanding and stimulating. I am constantly on my feet all day. My days are spent constantly redirecting my students behaviors, teaching to meet the academic needs of each individual student, giving out rewards, and more.

Food for thought, can you socialize effectively when you are hungry?

Hear my plea, children cannot learn when they are hungry. They just cannot! Our school has a very high poverty rate. We are a Title 1 School and have close to 100% free lunch servings. Our school has over 1000 students from various and similar backgrounds. Many of my upper graders complain of being hungry after four long hours of being in a classroom without anything to eat or drink. Having snacks will keep them strong and healthy. Snack breaks will keep my students motivated inspired and sound in mind.

My Project

Snacks and eating them are the two most important things my students think about during the day. All but one of my students complain every day of hunger. Our school has a very high(95%) poverty rate. I use snack as a bigger part of their reward system. We are requesting an inconceivable assortment of snacks, that can be eaten during breaks in the school day and as a positive behavioral reward. I have requested an assortment of snacks like granola bars, trail mix, and pretzels. These snacks will greatly impact my students. At the end of the school year my students will become more mild mannered and more healthy. My students will be able to say thank you to donors and stay on task. My students will learn to make health conscious decisions. My students will learn to write a journal entry explaining who, what, where, when, why and how they made healthy choices to improve his or her lifestyle.

My classroom quote:"You become what you think about." My students have shared with me about being hungry.

They want to become more happy, healthy and mild mannered by their graduation date. As a result of these donations to my classroom management reward project, my students' behavior will improve because they will come to know that there are people out there who really care. My biggest challenge in helping to change the lives of my students is the lack there of money or resources to buy healthy snacks.
