Empower my students with the tools to create audio recordings of their favorite books for peers and beginner readers.
My inner-city students have experienced many obstacles in their young lives. Despite the common threads of domestic abuse, disabilities effecting behavior, emotional development, and/or learning, and failure to thrive within mainstream school environments, my students have bonded in a sense of community and responsibility towards themselves and the group as a whole. A majority of my students read well below grade level and must make significant gains in order to pass the mandatory state testing (MCAS) required for graduation.
I am seeking 2 digital voice recorders to support my students quests to improve reading fluency, comprehension, and analysis skills. These devices will serve many purposes within my class. Students will be able to create "books on tape" that will be used to assist peers with weaker decoding skills. These recordings will also be used to create student-made "gifts" to elementary children, encouraging them to follow along in popular books. In creating these audio readings, students contribute to the support of others while improving upon their own oral reading skills. Review of these recordings will make students cognizant of voice inflection, fluency, and accuracy.
Your generous contribution will empower and encourage my students to be mindful of the needs of others. It will promote healthy co-dependence as well as independence. My impoverished students will be taught that when a kind act has been sent their way, that an act of kindness must then be reciprocated upon others in similar fashion.
