My students need a magnetic classroom calendar, an iPod touch, ink cartridges, and basic supplies to complete their grammar and literature online assignments in the classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When my students begin the school year, they sometimes feel overwhelmed by the different assignments they need to keep track of throughout the week. We begin on Mondays with vocabulary packets, continue with the grammar online assignments, and complete various literature quizzes online.
My students are diligent and hard working, which pushes me to improve the quality of my instruction each year.
They come from families who appreciate the value of education and want to support it but most of the times cannot due to financial difficulties. Some of my students work after school to support their families and that severely shortens the time they have to complete their homework.
My Project
I began using online programs to assign homework last year and it proved a tremendous success. Students are excited at the idea of completing their homework on a computer and they seem to do better than on regular paper assignments. The only difficulty I have encountered was that some students do not have an Internet connection at home or the computers they use are outdated. I talked to them and we agreed that the assignments can be completed after school if I had a computer or a laptop they can use to log on. Since laptops are more expensive, an iPod would work perfectly for them to use to take their quizzes. They can also print their reports to ensure that they will get credit for their work and they can ask for my help if they have any difficulty in the process. Once they have finished, I can use the binders to keep their reports together. I will also use the calendar to update the due dates for their assignments.
The use of technology is what motivates students to do their work and it gets them accustomed to assignments they will have to complete on a regular basis in college, especially if they take online classes.
The supplies you will donate to them will improve the quality of their work and will make them forget for a while that they cannot afford to buy those supplies at home.
