The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is an impactful and relevant book for 8th-grade students in NYC. It accurately portrays the reality of many relevant issues in today's society. The protagonist, Starr, is a relatable character who faces the challenges of living in two different worlds while trying to find her voice, making her an extremely relevant and relatable character. The book also raises important discussions about activism, social justice, and the power of speaking up. Moreover, the book offers a lens of empathy and understanding for students who may not have experienced these issues firsthand. Overall, The Hate U Give is a must-read for 8th-grade students to broaden their perspectives and encourage them to become agents of change.
