My Students

My students come to me with great expectation and to see how math relates to life. Some come to me with a wide knowledge of technology and easy access to them, but some do not. Mathematics is as much an aspect of culture as it is a collection of algorithms. By Carl Boyer (1949 calculus textbook)

My students have a great heart and I try my best to be nurturing and educating them with the best of my ability and resources.

With the surge of advance technology today, there are so many different ways to teach and learn, especially with access to Internet, but I have students who do not have this privilege. They are limited to text and paper and they are at a disadvantage when it comes to receiving the same quality education from me. My students are mostly comprised of Hispanic, Filipino and Caucasian and almost half of our school population is on the Free/Reduced lunch program. Although this might consist of a financial limitation, I do not want them to be limited in my classroom. I want all my students to be exposed to the best education possible and have the same access as someone sitting next to them. There are so many amazing videos, applications, functions from the computer that can be used to teach math, and I believe all of my students deserve to have access to them.

My Project

The current math curriculum that we are using is mostly comprised of online resources, and even the HW is based online. Although there is a textbook, the online version has so many resources that the student can access with a computer such as video explanations, glossary, calculator, step by step instructions, similar problems, etc. If my all students had access to the chromebooks I am asking, it would be tremendously beneficial to them because they will have the access to support and resources in which was not available before. My students will also be able to take tests online and watch video assignments that I have provided at their own pace. They will have the ability to pause and replay rather than me showing this one time during the class period to everyone. Although it's only 4 chromebooks, I can make it work for my classes as they rotate. Learning will be differentiated and fit into the learning style of every student. This will then become a huge positive in their learning.

The donations to my project will tremendously improve the ability for my students to learn and also give them numerous ways to learn the concepts, instead of limiting them to notes and paper.

There are so many visual ways to show them a math concept, and if I allow all of my students to see this, I know it will be beneficial to them. My students are all unique and they have different ways of learning. However, giving technology access to everyone will greatly enhance their way of learning.
