Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
These are unprecedented times. Never did I imagine that when my students and I said goodbye in March it would mean that it was our last day in the classroom. The last day of school has come! Even though they are moving on to middle school, they are still my students!
My students and I have embarked on the distance learning journey!
We are actively engaged in all sorts of different online platforms and learning new things. My students and I participate two times a week in Zoom meetings to go over assignments, and to check in with each other. We are currently reading HOLES and completing a book study. I am so proud by their willingness to try new things.
My Project
Many of the students I serve come from homes experiencing financial hardship. These students are our most vulnerable and are those who are most negatively impacted by not having access to reading materials from school or public libraries. They are all closed.
Reading books online is not the same as having a book in your hand.
Many of these students are struggling academically and do not have home libraries or the ability to place an order online. It is imperative that we find ways to get books into their hands. My goal is to get 1-2 books in every student's hand so they can avoid the summer slide. Also by reading these books, students can complete novel studies and book reports. Some students also live near each other so they switch books. The important thing is to just keep reading!
