My Students
"A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there," Charles Darwin said, and my students feel like they are blind in math. That is why they need the JUMP Math program to help students make a connection to the light switch of math learning!
I teach a wonderful group of twenty-three fifth graders.
Last year, over 78% of the students at our school qualified for free or reduced price lunch. My hopes are to teaching math to fifth grade students so they finally understand how to solve problems, and they are no longer left in the dark with math. Often, this means that half of my students will need me to re-teach a lesson to them three or more times before they understand what we are doing. With the JUMP math workbooks I am requesting, I can have my more advanced students working on the advanced concepts, while my other students work with me in the re-teach sections of the workbooks. Through the leveled workbooks and hands-on activities, all of my students will be working at their own levels to clearly learn the concepts behind the Common Core state standards.
My Project
Providing a solid foundation for math in fifth grade will mean the difference between a math lover and math hater. Too many adults say they "can't do math" and I want to avoid that with my students by using the JUMP curriculum. What's fantastic about the JUMP Math program is that it includes many pages showing and explaining the key concepts in fifth grade math. By using the JUMP program, SMART resources and my math tricks, we can help every student succeed and learn to love math! Our district has not provided us with any resources to teach the new Common Core standards so this program would make all the difference to my math curriculum.
Math can be fun, noisy, and exciting for students.
Students can learn with the JUMP program by playing math games and working through the workbook. Help my students make a connection so the entire class understands the new Common Core standards in math.
