Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Get into the Christmas spirit and inspire students of poverty to read. Many of my students are behind in reading because they are learning English. Because of this they are forced into scripted reading programs that do not inspire them to read or teach them of the joys of literature.

I have fantastic students who are so imaginative and creative but struggle with reading.

Our school is labeled a "failing school" so we have had to cut out science, social studies, art and fill it with a very scripted reading curriculum. There is also no time for read aloud. Since they are all immigrants their families do not have the resources to fill their homes with books that they love. Anytime I have a quick moment to read to them "Skippyjon Jones" they become so excited and inspired to read and actually ENJOY reading. They especially like him because he speaks Spanish and English like them. I send a student each weekend with one of our cherished books and the doll to bring home to read and write about what they did. It would be so amazing if they could EACH have their very own books and doll to inspire them all everyday at home.

My Project

Since my students come from families that are struggling, Christmas is often not a happy time. But if I could receive books for them to read during winter break, it would give them something to look forward to and give them something fun and academic to work on. On the last day before break I would surprise them all with the books. I can already imagine the joy on their faces to realize that they have their VERY OWN collection of books to read at home.

Please help me inspire my students to read at home and give them a Christmas story they will never forget.

They will realize that people care about them and want them to be life long learners and readers. Most of them do not have books at home and have not found the simple joy of curling up with a good book. In addition, 2nd grade is a critical year for them to become proficient readers to be successful in school.
