My Students

My students are a unique group of individuals who are kind, sweet and inspiring. I work in a self-contained special education classroom with high needs students. Ninety percent of my students have autism.

Teaching my students can be challenging, yet so rewarding.

I may teach the same lesson many times over many days, then one day a student will get it and be so proud and pleased. That is the reward in teaching my special students. We have a mixed aged classroom with students in grades Pre K to third grade. We have four adults in the class to provide the highest educational experience and tend to their individual personal needs.

My Project

My students are non verbal and have trouble getting their ideas and needs across to others. When students cannot communicate they can become highly upset very quickly. iPads allow students to communicate with the world, express themselves and is essential to the educational process. When kids with autism are able to communicate they are calmer and have less tantrums. They learn more quickly and are happier. When loaded with a communication app iPads are vital for nonverbal children. I have a fond memory of a student from 6 years ago. He was nonverbal and wanted a banana. He picked up his communication device (iPad with aac app) and pressed the words to let me know exactly what he wanted. He is now in middle school and no longer needs an iPad to communicate.
