This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of us remember dramatic play from our own childhoods: the ability to be anything we want without a worry in the world. Creative dramatic play helps children learn how to share, communicate and cooperate with each other. Through role playing, children also learn how to develop empathy for others. With a dramatic play area, my students will be able to better understand the important role of our community workers by acting out these roles.
One of the goals in our California Kindergarten Social Studies curriculum is to provide the children with opportunities to explore the community, its structures and human activities. I take my students on several walking trips throughout the year to visit and learn about the workers and services that make up our community. I would like to provide a place in my room where the students can go and act out what they have learned about the community through dramatic play.
To help build a dramatic play center in the classroom, I am asking for a career costume set from the Lakeshore Learning Company. This set includes realistic, easy to put on costumes—designed to fit a wide range of sizes. The ten costumes will give my students the opportunity to dress up as a construction worker, mail carrier, nurse, doctor, chef, police officer, firefighter, astronaut, pilot, and veterinarian. This center will include other dramatic play equipment, and the students can turn it into a variety of places—a house, market, post office, doctor's office, etc.
These costumes will be shared by two classrooms. The students include both English and non-English speakers, as well as students with disabilities. The costumes are durable and will last for many years to come. My school, Germain St. Elementary, is a multi-cultural, public school set in the San Fernando Valley.
Please help me provide a these wonderful costumes for my students!
