This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low income neighborhood in Queens. I have been a classroom teacher for 13 years. Year after year, we receive students fresh from their countries, not speaking a word of English. Let's put books in their hands and see what happens!
Our student population is not native to the United States of America.
Most of the students are from South America and Asia. They are the most eager, sweetest children who have their eyes wide open when it comes to reading new and interesting books. Our libraries are leveled according to letter. We are in dire need of new books for our Library. My kids love to read and go through the books so fast, that they are getting bored. As a teacher, I am scrambling each week to find new books for these students to read. With this new library, we would be thrilled and engaged once again.
My Project
The books that I have requested for my children are crucial to my their progress this year. In third grade, they must sustain reading for 40 minutes. They are going to fall in love with these classics in the collection of books I have chosen. Filling their book bags with new books to take home and share with their families would bring such a smile to their faces.
I hold true to my title: "Give a kid a book and see them smile!" Just like the US ARMY states, "We are in need of a few good men and women." I say,"3rd Grade is in need of a few new books!" Thank you so much!
