My students need the GIS kits to allow them the first hand experience of using today's technology so that they can compete in today's job market and succeed in high school.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 7th and 8th graders who live in a large urban city; 99.5% are low-income which limits their out-of-school experiences with science and technology. Many students do not continue school past high school. So learning of technology and science today is critical to motivating them to pursue careers in technology and science; they need positive experiences now that move them to continue their schooling for better futures.
Our budget is limited to textbooks and a few supplies. This new technology, GPS, is not a part of our current curriculum but is a relevant technology in today's society. It needs to be learned and experienced by our students so they can compete in today's jobs.
The GPS kits will allow students to study insects in their neighborhood while they collect data using GPS. They will be engaged learners while they use real tools to collect reputable data on insect populations and varieties. This lesson set involves technology, biology and environmental sciences and connects to students' lives; making for a powerful unit of study.
Please help make this unit of study possible by donating these two kits to our students. It will allow my classes of 30 students each to work in small groups as scientists.
