My Students

The term BUDGET CRISIS means BUDGET CUTS for schools. Arts, music and sports programs are the first to go. And by sports, they mean girls sports! Even at the elementary levels the importance of sports is geared toward boys. I want to show my girls they can play too.

We are an urban inner city school in one of the largest metropolitan areas in California.

As most people across our great nation have heard we rank 47 out of 50 in public funds going directly to our students. In our school, the majority of students are black and latino. The area where most of my students live has high crime, rampant drug abusers, and high teen pregnancies. I teach my students that through education they can rise above their current circumstances. Volleyball is an after school activity that gives them an opportunity to be a part of a positive environment. Sports in general provide an opportunity for low income students to have access to scholarships to attend college. These girls want a better life. My goal is to give them activities that promote life skills and life long interest in fitness. It is up to you to help provide us with the basic resources.

My Project

By having volleyballs to play with gives the students a safe and productive after-school activity. They will be able to interact with positive adult role models and build strong relations with other students who wish to be surrounded by positive influences. Participating in sports gives students skills to adopt life long healthy habits. Students will learn to warm up, stretch, and learn the basics of volleyball. They will learn the importance of working cooperatively. If possible, students might be able to use these skills to play other elementary schools.

Too many inner-city students lose their lives to gang violence, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy.

Research has shown that after-school activities reduce that number by 50%. The budget crisis in our state should not be allowed to reverse the hard work our community inputted. Your donation will help us get 9 volleyballs to start an after-school sports program to give students a place to play instead of the mean city streets. Thank you.
