Girls Make Great Scientists Too, I Can Prove It!

My Students

As a teacher of English language learners, I have many opportunities to watch my students engage in language experiences and become world citizens. Across 3 different school sites, I serve 55 students, all of which are learning English and come from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. These students show enthusiasm not only towards learning a new cultural and new language, but also towards building a learning community. They bring unique experiences and knowledge to our schools and have goals to either go to a technical college, a 2 year college, or a 4 year university.

My Project

To celebrate March, which is National Women's History Month, I'd like to show all my students examples of incredible contributions that women have made to the world of science.

I believe these books can jump-start scientific thinking and motivation in my room by providing powerful examples of women scientists.

First, to address the girl students. Today women only make up 20% of the students pursuing Engineering degrees. I think my girl students would make great engineers! I'd like to help them imagine a future where they could be anything, including having a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Second, the boy students. These scientific advancements and ideas are so inspiring I'm sure that my male students will benefit as well! I'd really love to see an environment in my school and in my classroom where boys and girls are working together to solve science quandaries.

Through read-alouds and student research I can broaden my students' perspectives on what it means to be a scientist! I'd appreciate your help!
