Girls Love Graphic Novels Too!

My students need graphic novel titles that appeal to middle school girls!

My Students

My school is charged with educating an incredibly diverse population, including a very large group of students who are refugees. Because of our high English Language Learner and population receiving Special Education services, many of my students are still beginning readers.

My students love to come to school, even though it can be tough for them at times.

They take their education very seriously, and have a desire to become fluent readers. My students are active, joyful, and eager to learn!

My Project

I have had two previous Donor's Choose projects funded that added a variety of graphic novels to our classroom library. However, I've had many girls mention that there were some titles that I didn't have in my library that they'd really like to see.

My students (many of whom are refugees or new to the United States) have shown a great disinterest in reading and the thought of digging into a book that is in a new language is an extremely difficult and uninviting task...especially when there are no pictures or graphics to look at alongside the words.

So the fact that they are asking for books is an encouraging sign!

My girls who are learning English still, and my girls receiving Special Education services will be able to not only find interesting books to read, but they'll be able to use the pictures to help them form a better understanding of what they've read. My native-born girls will also benefit from an assortment of new high-interest books being added to the classroom library to choose from.
