Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! (With STEM)

Help me give my students Mighty Makers sets from K’NEX to help engage young female students in STEM activities.

My Students

Walk into my classroom and you will see twenty-five students noisily engaged in learning. Some students may be working together on a puzzle, building an obstacle course for robots, counting with math manipulatives, curled up with a book or working with me in a small group. As a visitor, these students look very similar, but as their teacher, I know which student may not have had supper last night, who stayed with older siblings while Mom worked a second job, whose parents are getting a divorce and which one is homeless and living in a shelter.

Our classroom is a family.

We may not begin the year that way but it is definitely how we end the year. We laugh, cry and celebrate with each other. We care. We love.

My Project

We have started having STEM Fridays in our kindergarten classroom. The students love it! Well, at least most of them do. We have a wide variety of robots and DUPLO sets and other STEM activities but I have noticed some of my girls are not as engaged as the boys.

I reached out to other teachers in my PLN (Personal Learning Network) for suggestions.

I was excited to learn that K'NEX has Might Maker sets geared specially for engaging young, female students in STEM activities. Some of the sets include Clubhouse Building, Home Designing and World Travels.

These sets will allow my students to create and build many different activities. Who knows where these sets will lead? Will they produce an astronaut, a physicist or a doctor? Watching my students create and problem solve with these sets will be awesome. I cannot wait to see how my students will become more enthusiastic about STEM Fridays.
