My Students

Our students are 8th grade girls with diverse backgrounds who want to further explore what an education and career in STEM can offer. Our members will be both from within the highly gifted program offered at the middle school along with outside of the program in order to offer inspiration to all students who share a love for science.

We hope that this club will inspire students to pursue knowledge in science and technology throughout the rest of their education, and to bridge the gender gap in these fields.

My Project

Only 30% of STEM degrees in the United States are awarded to females, leading to a large gender discrepancy within STEM fields (U.S. Department of Education). We hope that this group will add to the movement of lessening this gap by inspiring young women to follow their dreams. The "Owl Pellet Study Classroom Kit" will be used in our predator-prey interaction activity, and the chromatography will compliment our chemistry lesson.

The goal of this group is to expose 8th grade girls to the many potential careers within science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, and motivate them to pursue further education in these areas.

We approach this goal through hands-on activities, and by encouraging an open learning environment for girls to explore and experience science and technology. We also connect our girls with women in science careers so they can find knowledgeable mentors and gain a better understanding of specific STEM careers.

With the graciously donated funds, we will purchase materials for the hands-on activities for the Fall and Winter 2016 meetings. We believe that this group can serve as a foundation for a lifetime love of science for our students.
