Girls Building Worlds

My students need building and game supplies (Legos, blocks, games) to add to the art classroom. They are visiting different worlds and imagining places that only live inside their minds. These supplies allow for kinesthetic experiences with imaginary communities.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Conner's classroom raised $352

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are ninety percent free lunches. Many come from single parent, working class, Spanish speaking environments. Opportunities in abundance on the other side of town seem like a fantasy in our classroom. My students aren't vacationing; instead, they read or draw to travel. I have to ask important questions, checking clarity because what seems a given to me, may not be for my students who struggle to see "fantasy" in the urban environment.

This year I created learning centers in the art classroom offering experiences with diverse art materials based on different levels of ability.

Soon I identified unexpected trends in the art room. In one area of my classroom was a small box of legos and on the other side of the room a yellow container of old fashioned blocks. I was amazed how many of the female students waited patiently for their turn and glowingly sat down to create a structure. The students talked about what the buildings were in relation to each other and who lived there. Our principal passed by the room and stopped to enjoy the elaborate stories the students shared. The student collaborations were effortless and exciting.

My Project

My students will use blocks and legos to create three-dimensional representations of their two-dimensional designs. They will use art media to draw their proposed structure and the donated supplies to bring it to fruition.

Students will develop several architectural designs and work in groups to transform the design into a three-dimensional model using the blocks and legos.

The legos and blocks will be the tools that allow for lateral thinking. Students will be problem-solvers as they organize and plan the construction of their communities with a female student as head of operations. These female lead groups will provide experiences in leadership, critical thinking and problem-solve for the young girl leaders. These experiences will be opportunities to challenge creativity and enhance communication within small strategic groupings. My students live in an urban environment and these legos and blocks will allow students to practice motor development while providing plenty of opportunities for differentiation. Students will make something tangible as they see their own ideas come to life.
