This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Deona and her friends care about sports on campus, but that doesn't stop them from being honors students.

I asked my students, if you could help the school and neighborhood in one way, what would you do? The girls' basketball team rallied our 2nd period class. They need their own equipment. Right now they share with the guys, but it's just not enough to go around for anyone!

After school programs, like sports, keep our kids safe. Our school is situated in one of the most violent and poor neighborhoods in the country. The teamwork and problem solving skills my students learn as they join a team and speak for themselves transcend even a few games played on a court.

In Their Own Words

We are student athletes who care about our future as becoming professionals and athletes. We think students who are interested in playing girls basketball should be fully exposed to what it is really like. We are also students who think we should have a great team and not just any ordinary team that doesn't understand or know how to play the sport. Girls' basketball at our school isn’t even really acknowledged because we don’t have the materials we need.

The reason we want better equipment is because we want a “pre-experience” on how college basketball will actually be. With better and more equipment students would feel inspired and motivated. If we have new and good equipment we can possibly get the practice we need that can lead us to a better team. Better equipment leads to more opportunities.

Our girls' basketball team doesn’t have the proper equipment in order to warm up or to get ready for our games. Our school is in one of the lowest income communities, so it is very difficult for the girls' basketball team to get new balls. The girls' basketball team warms up/practices with old dirty balls which often don’t have air. How can we win games when we don’t have the proper equipment to practice?
