This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, I am co-facilitating a group with 13, 6th grade girls. The girls have been identified as at-risk due to their living conditions. a few of them are currently homeless, living in motels and their family car. Most of my students come from low socioeconomic families with often only one parent working or from a single parent household. The neighborhood can be difficult to grow up in, yet my students come with a smile on their faces and with positive attitudes. They try their best to remain focused on the lessons in class but often struggle as they may worry about bare necessities.

During our first meeting, the students immediately asked if we would provide them with items they could take home to use or eat.

This struck a chord in me. I was taken aback with the innocent question. My colleague and I immediately began thinking of what snacks we could bring but as we did this, we realized that our students may not be getting other basic needs met. During the next meetings I had with the group, I noticed that some of them come in disheveled, with dirty clothing and often with poor hygiene.

My Project

During my girl empowerment group that I co-facilitate, students often come in disheveled and often appear to lack basic hygiene items. This appears to negatively impact their self-esteem and their own sense of self. The girls come from low socioeconomic houses who often cannot provide basic needs for their children.

These personal hygiene items will help my tween students as they transition into their teenage years.

By providing them with these items, they will have one less thing to worry about when they come to school. My students will feel empowered and have items at their disposal to use when they need them.
