Girl Power Through Literature Circles!

My project needs 5 copies of several book titles focusing on issues affecting adolescent girls.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Will's classroom raised $469

This project is fully funded

I teach reading and writing to at-risk tenth graders in an inner-city Chicago high school. My students are enrolled in a special program for struggling learners with a history of failure. My students are not only a year or two older than most tenth graders, they are wise beyond their years because of the adult responsibilities that have been thrust upon them. They are growing up in neighborhoods riddled with gangs, drugs, and violence. For many of my students, the greatest challenge school presents them with is getting here safely.

This neighborhood presents a host of challenges that affect my female students. Many of them have been raised by single mothers and have not seen many positive male-female relationships. In turn, I have noticed a number of my female students involved in abusive relationships, both physically and emotionally. I have taught many teen mothers who have their own set of challenges. I have also observed my girls using relational aggression against each other, rather than strengthening their bonds as friends.

I believe that I can combat some of these problems with the use of literature circles that focus on topics for young women. Through the process of reading and discussing these novels, my girls will have the chance to increase female bonding and decrease relational aggression. Not only will this improve their "girl power," it will also help improve reading and discussion skills.

Your generous donation will be greatly appreciated. You will empower my students to stand up against the cycle of "baby mama drama" and begin creating "girl power."
