Ginkgo Trees To Help Us Remember Climate Matters

We need seeds for Ginkgo biloba L. trees. We will also need a heavy duty cart to transport sapling Ginkgo trees we have from the front of the school to planting sites.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Evans-Bye's classroom raised $216

About My Students

Gabriella, Paniz, Anna, Christina and Saril are the M.E. R. maids who have earned their land legs. The girls enrolled in my Environmental GIS class to take action on an environmental issue. After working to decrease marine debris, they've identified rising levels of carbon dioxide as the next issue they'd like to address. They are currently creating an online interactive campus tree map using ArcGIS mapping and analysis software. We are hoping that Donor's Choose can help us take the project to the next level by adding more trees!

Students will develop analytical science skills through measuring the amount of atmospheric carbon that the Ginkgo biloba trees reduce. They will increase their environmental stewardship skills by caring for the new trees and sharing the benefits of their natural service functions through public speaking presentations. This project will require much teamwork.

In Their Own Words

The goal of our project is to reduce our carbon footprint by planting ginkgo trees at our school. We will measure the amount of carbon being absorbed by all the trees on campus using the National Tree Benefit Calculator at our school and compare the sequestration rates from before and after we plant the trees. The Ginkgo biloba tree reduces the largest amount of atmospheric carbon per year relative to most other tree species.

By planting trees that are known to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we will be taking a stand in order to fight against climate change. In reducing our carbon footprint, we will lead as an example and have others follow our path to continue what we started. We wrote a proposal to plant the trees and got it approved by school administration. We will work with our project partner, the Green Club, at our school to plant and care for the trees. We will also work with the Tree People organization to help us with a tree dedication ceremony for our long time supporter, Johnny Harrison from Lexus of Glendale. Once the trees are planted, we will pass down the responsibility of caring for these trees to the next generation and have them continue the legacy that we began.

This project will have a significant impact in our school and community because each sapling will reduce 15 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere the first year and increase sequestration every year thereafter until it is fully grown 75 years from now. Seedlings will have a slower start, but will demonstrate the same effect. It is important for us all to do our part to reduce the impact of climate change.
