Our school corporation is a rural district, trying to equip our students with the skills and experiences to be successful in our ever-changing world. I have the privilege to teach first grade, in our small rural district.
My first grade students are excited about the world around them.
As their teacher, it is my goal to create opportunities to make them curious about the world around them. My goal is to empower them to ask questions and find answers. My students are world changers.
My Project
I would love to provide the supplies for my inspiring engineers to design, create and build their own gingerbread houses! Students would research house and building designs. They would spend time collaborating and viewing current house and building designs. We would discuss building materials, structure, and design. Students will create a sketch and create a wooden prototype with blocks. Then we will spend a day (with parent volunteers) building our village! We need lots of icing for this project! I know from experience, that to make these designs stick, we need royal icing and patience! Students can also choose to use the red hot candies, the candy canes, the sprinkles, and the candy shingles to add flair to their designs! I am also requesting squeeze bottles, so students can fill them with icing and apply the candy decorations. Students will enjoy using these materials to create their gingerbread masterpieces!
Students will gain experience in building and perseverance as they use the icing, gingerbread kits, and sprinkles to make their ideas become a reality.
This would also count as a shared "How-To" writing activity for our young authors. Gingerbread architects would be a fun (and messy), unforgettable learning experience!
