My Students

It's no surprise that being thrown into remote learning without much warning was difficult for students. It's also no surprise that my students have faced this challenge head on and are doing everything they can to further their education. In addition to attending my office hours, some of them have requested one-on-one tutoring and help sessions. They email me and meet via Zoom regularly. Sometimes the topics are course related, but other times they just need someone to talk to about what's going on in their lives right now. Their success during these unprecedented times is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

My Project

Like high school seniors all over the nation, my students are frustrated and disappointed that they have missed their senior ball and senior picnic. While they will probably have a graduation, it is far from the graduation of their dreams. There are also day-to-day school day activities that they will never get to do again. They didn't know that in mid March they were closing their lockers for the last time.

Although their senior year is not ending with an elaborate ceremony, I want them to know that I care about them.

I am in the unique position of having taught my seniors for two years in a row. They enter the program in their junior year and then loop with me the following year, so I have gotten to know them very well through their writing, class discussions, and daily conversations.

This time of isolation has been hard for them. Many of them have told me that a virtual class just isn't the same. That's why I want to do something special for these students by delivering college survival kits to their homes. They kits will include essentials for class like sharpies and highlighters, along with other items like a flashlight, lint roller, duck tape, and snacks. By supporting this project, you will provide a group of graduating seniors with a care package to show them that they have not been forgotten.
