Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The children in my Gifted & Talented groups differ from their peers in many ways. They typically learn to read early, and nearly half the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school. They often read widely, quickly, and intensely and have large vocabularies. It is common for them to learn basic skills better, more quickly, and with less practice. They are better able to construct and handle abstractions and often pick up and interpret nonverbal cues and can draw inferences that other children need to have spelled out for them. They often have seemingly boundless energy, which sometimes leads to a misdiagnosis of hyperactivity. They tackle tasks and problems in a well-organized, goal-directed, and efficient manner. They exhibit an intrinsic motivation to learn, find out, or explore and are often very persistent. "I'd rather do it myself" is a common attitude.

My Project

We will incorporate the lessons available from the You Can Do the Cube website. After a bit of hard work, focus and determination, they'll be able to solve it, and there will be a noticeable shift in their thinking and their approach to other challenges. As they manipulate the Rubik's Cube, (many for the first time ever), twisting and turning the parts, students grasp important math concepts including area, perimeter, volume, angles, algorithms, and enumeration, among many other geometry, algebraic and general math topics.

The strategy behind Rubik's Cubes has a direct correlation to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM); it is problem-solving and critical thinking in its purest form.

The program includes videos and instructional materials that will help us explore those connections. The learning process promotes deep thinking, and upon completion creates incredible feelings of pride and confidence. More importantly, they will learn patience. They will learn to believe in their abilities, and they will learn to dream those impossible dreams. They will be challenged and hopefully have fun!
