My students need copies of the novels such as "Crime and Punishment" and "Macbeth" that will help them score well on the AP exam and broaden their knowledge of classical literature.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds; some of them enter high school without having read one book in English. Their exposure to literature is minimal.
I am blessed to work with students who have clear goals in life: they want to attend prestigious colleges and they prepare for that by studying to score well in their AP and SAT exams.
If I assign chapters to be read at home, about 90% of my students complete that assignment. The discussions that we have in class prove to me that their interest in literature is growing with every text that we read.
I love it when these connections with literature turn into inside jokes that they tell each other because that makes us feel like family. Our small school, averaging 850 students every year, has limited funds, especially for the English department, even though our CST proficient and advanced percentages are within 70%. Besides textbooks, there are few resources that we can use for the upper levels and that places my students at a disadvantage when they are compared against other states/districts.
My Project
"Crime and Punishment" and "Macbeth" are works of literary merit that will provide excellent support for students who take the AP exam to respond to essay prompt #3. They will also offer students a broad perspective of literature and the opportunity to be exposed to different historical and cultural contexts.
The study guides and student packets will help me structure my lesson plans in a better way and provide instructional handouts to students. If the project gets sponsored in a short time, I can include both texts in my syllabus and complete both units before the AP exam in May.
I am a parent myself, and when my daughter passed her gifted test in her 2nd grade I was excited, thinking that she will be given better opportunities to learn.
Yet, whenever I asked the teacher if there were any extracurricular activities/resources/assignments, he or she would reply in the same way: there are no funds for the program. I want to be the teacher who says yes, it is possible, due to your donations. Give gifted students a chance to show potential for excellency in our education!
