My Project

My English Language Learners are the hardest sweetest workers I have each year. No matter how happy and committed they are, they still have the hard task of having to learn another language, while trying to learn their grade level content as well. Not understanding can get in the way of their connections, learning, and their tasks at hand. Research says that,

"Repeated practice of translating and retranslating a single text back and forth between two languages will help you to learn to think in terms of the overall message that you are trying to convey, without getting hung up on the individual words or structures that you will require to say it."

I'm wishing for a positive tool for our classroom in order to communicate needs along the way for these hard workers. This would allow more time for learning and doing. It would also help us learn each others languages so much faster. Many times my kiddo's that don't understand what I just have said, rely on social cues or a tiny bit of Spanish translation from their peers or me. We are stuck in that phase of 'getting hung up,' rather than learning the content together successfully. It would be so wonderful to have a tool to summarize each task or each target into a device, and have it read it back for my students in real time. We have tried many things including picture dictionaries, Google Translate type tools, and relying on our little translator students, but we are wishing for a better/faster tool.
