Gift Cards For Talented Students

My Students

I am the inclusion specialist for an inclusive program at BCLA for students diagnosed with autism. This is the second year of the program and still requires resources for all the students to have the resources they need. These students go to all general education classes, they just have some extra support from me and the staff working in my classroom. I love working with these students because they have their own unique personality that is special to the world. Our group of kids are your typical teenagers; they love to joke around and are very caring for one another. Even though we have known each other for only approximately only a few months, we already feel like family.

We celebrate the small wins, something that may seem insignificant, such as doing one assignment of homework a night, is a big victory for us.

We do learn about the regular subjects (math, science, history, and english), but we also try to incorporate how to be a functioning member of a community with social skills lessons. Honestly, these kids make coming to work every day a joy!

My Project

The pandemic has created immense challenges for everybody, especially the high needs students who also come from low socioeconomic status households. Many of my students find it extremely challenging remotely and usually rely on the in-person school to provide them the support that they need.

To try to make up for the immense learning loss that has occurred due to the pandemic, we are raising money for gift cards to provide students positive tangible reinforcement as an incentive for positive behavioral and academic behavior.

During school, my students are usually provided with a positive reinforcement system where they earn points (for things like work completion, class participation, and other various goals set forth on their IEP) to access preferred activities mostly centered around earning time on electronics. Remote learning makes this type of system impossible because at home they can access preferred activities whenever they would like.

Last spring, when attendance was very low at the beginning of online learning, I implemented a very similar system where students would earn door-dash/grub-hub gift cards (which I funded myself) for attending classes. Due to this reinforcement system, attendance skyrocketed from 30 % to approximately 80 %. I am happy to report so far this school year 100 % of my students are attending classes and attendance is no longer one of the challenges we are facing. I am hoping that funding for gift cards will help achieve the same type of results for assisting my students in achieving academic success in remote learning.
