My Students

My students are more than just identification numbers and test scores. They are students who are getting ready for the real-world! I have a group of students who are excited about tinkering and exploring the world around them, and who want to take advantage of our school's dedicated time each day during our "Discovery Period." These are students who aren't particularly interested in the arts, but who have a knack for working with their hands. Many are students who are receiving special education services, who don't get a lot of extra opportunities in school.

My Project

Earlier this year, I created a Donors Choose to get some graphic novels for my READ 180 class. It completely changed my students' attitudes about reading and now I have to pry the books out of their hands. They have been asking me to complete several graphic novel series (specifically the Maximum Ride series and the Amulet series) that I only had a few books from. And when your students ask you for more books...there's only one thing to do...get them more books!

My students (many of whom are refugees or new to the United States) have shown a great disinterest in reading.

The thought of digging into a book that is in a new language is an extremely difficult and uninviting task...especially when there are no pictures or graphics to look at alongside the words.

My students who are learning English still, and my students receiving Special Education services will be able to not only find interesting books to read, but they'll be able to use the pictures to help them form a better understanding of what they've read. My native-born students will also benefit from an assortment of new high-interest books being added to the classroom library to choose from.
