Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in a low-economic area where 84% of the kids receive free or reduced lunch. Their parents don't have the resources to buy books, and reading at home is not a priority. We are a Title 1, Reading First, Read 180 school. We have also recently become a Performing Plus school on the Arizona Learns Profile after two years of Under Performing and one year as Performing. We are also striving to keep up the momentum by earning the Highly Performing label next year.
As the school librarian, I support literacy in many ways. I would like to continue that support by updating our library collection with current authors and books to entice and keep kids reading. The hottest topics are ghosts and gross. R.L. Stine's "Rotten School" series meets both of those criteria. We currently have two copies and kids are always asking when we will be getting more.
This series will appeal to all types of second through eighth grade kids especially the boys and other reluctant readers. Boys and reluctant readers are the most difficult to entice. If we can convince these students to read more and read often that is half the battle. Not only will our kids be more literate but they will also become life-long readers.
This project will make a difference in how our kids read. Wanting to read is just as important as learning how to read.
A topic like ghosts and gross can make a HUGE difference.
My project needs 15 library bound "Rotten School" books. The cost of this proposal is $209, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment.
