Getting VersaTile With Math Again

Help me give my students a fourth grade hand2mind VersaTiles Math Classroom Kit.

My Students

It's a new year at a new grade level! My fourth grade students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school. Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and a large percentage of our school qualifies for free or reduced price lunches. However, our teachers embrace this rural advantage and make the effort to break the mold of the traditional classroom setting by connecting our students to their community and utilizing the plethora of resources that our country setting provides us.

Our students are continually experimenting, creating, and thinking critically in our new STEM lab and outdoor classroom.

They are passionate about learning and thrive when presented with new tools and experiences. Despite all of our hard work, many continue to struggle with the very basics of math, which focuses on skills they will need throughout the rest of their lives. With the implementation of the new Common Core Standards, expectations in math are higher than they have ever been before. Through this project, I hope to continue to instill a love of math in my students, while helping them to become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.

My Project

The hand2mind Versatiles Math Classroom Kit includes 24 activity books, 8 self-checking answer cases, and 1 teacher guide that covers topics in numbers and operations, fractions, measurement and data, and geometry. VersaTiles are a low-prep solution to math practice, offering an alternative to traditional skill practice in a safe learning environment that increases student confidence. For over 50 years, hand2mind has encouraged hands-on learning and discovery, driving deeper understanding and helping students unlock their full potential. All VersaTile kits are aligned to nationally and state recognized standards. I envision using this kit as a bell-ringer activity, during center time, or for my early-finishing students for structured, independent practice.

Currently, the mathematics textbook resources we have at our school are so out-of-date that our teachers have worked to developed their own program from a multitude of sources.

Despite our hardships, our educators continue set high expectations for their students to maintain a daily productive rigor in mathematics. These project resources will help students to set goals and find success at their own differentiated level, allowing all students to realize their innate potential that will propel them in their future educational endeavors. The skills they will be practicing will translate into their education, workplace, and social relationships, and in doing so, will follow them for the rest of their lives. I instruct a population of very enthusiastic learners and I am anxious to introduce these new math resources into their classroom routine, because I know they will share in my excitement for this new approach to learning!
