This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A strong vocabulary is key skill for success in college and in life. My students need to increase their vocabularies, and one of the best ways to do this is to learn the root words that are used as building blocks for many different words. These are word parts such as "bio", "pan", "logy".

I teach in an urban high school whose student population is 80% African-American and 90%+ free and reduced lunch.

Our students go through all the problems of the inner city: gangs, drugs, poverty, illiteracy, and so forth. They lack the basic skills they need to get into college and get good paying jobs.

My Project

Your donation will help my students catch up with those who start out with greater advantages. Since root words are used in so many different words in English, learning them unlocks a world of meaning for those who have mastered their meanings. This helps with basic literacy, reading fluency, and comprehension.

You will help them gain the skills they need to break their cycle of poverty. You will give them a most precious gift: the gift of language and reading.
