My Students
Have you ever wondered what an artist was thinking when he painted his masterpiece? Or what was it like to study art while sailing on a gondola? Well, my students ask me these questions and other art historically related questions everyday and as good as I am, I do not always have the answers.
I’m the visual arts teacher at a Title I elementary school in southeast Washington, DC.
I currently teach visual arts to over 350 students in grades ranging from Pre-school to sixth grade. I have been teaching in the same school for the past twelve years. I have made it not just my job but my duty to bring the arts to the students that I have. It has become a personal quest to make sure they are aware of the why’s, what’s, who’s, where’s as it relates to the piece of art that they have become so accustomed to see when we come to the art studio.
My Project
Traditionally students always feel that art is simply drawing and painting and they are now coming around to realize that art is much more than that. It includes the history and cultures from around the world. And those artists are responsible for documenting what happened long before newspapers, TV and radio. They can see all of this, and I can share these opportunities with them from within the classroom. "Getting to Know The World’s Greatest Artist" written by Mike Venezia believes that “the best way to introduce kids to art and artists is through fun. If kids can look at art in a fun way, and think of the artists as real people, then the exciting world of art will open up to them for the rest of their lives.” The books are written in such a manner that my entire school would be able to read about the artist on their own and draw their own conclusions to the lives of the artist. And by having the complete set, the students would be able to know about more artists from throughout history.
To be a real artist, you must first become a real art historian to be able to answer those real tough questions of the why’s, what’s, who’s, where’s of the greatest.
The books will inspire them to study the arts not just as a lesson/unit but as a means to understand cultures and the way of life. The books have the potential to be the most valuable resource in the art studio right up there with the canvas, paint and clay.
