it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We live in an ever-increasing visual world. We are constantly exposed to images. Images are all around us...on tvs, computers, phones, newspapers, books, billboards, etc... To help my students better understand the modern world, I provide activities that foster visual literacy. Visual literacy is the ability to understand and produce visual messages. It is a staple of 21st century skills. How can we give our students 21st skills without the proper tools?
Our students are amazing!
We have some of the most creative, artistic and inspiring students around. Our students live on the Lower East Side but have roots from around the world—China, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic—just to name a few. We are an exciting bunch! Many of our students are working on learning a second language. Our school has a dual language program for Mandarin and Spanish. The diversity in our students makes for an exciting learning environment for all— especially in the art room. Our students bring their unique experiences and rich culture into everything they do. What amazing art they create! What wonderful stories they have to share!
My Project
I would like to begin this school year by adding supplies and equipment to my art room that will promote student agency. Simply put, student agency gives students voice and choice in how they learn. When students are agents in learning they will become creative, critical thinkers who have a deeper understanding of content and a higher motivation to learn. The materials listed in my project will do just that. My students can use the iPad to research and write about art topics that interest them. The camera can be used by students to capture pictures of their best work or a work in progress. Flexible seating will open up the art room and provide students with more comfortable places to explore their imagination and create. The scenarios for how the students will use the color printer are endless. High-quality color printing is naturally engaging for all learners, and it provides a useful bridge between the digital and print world.
Donations to this project would be greatly appreciated by all my amazing art students.
I know these materials will boost intrinsic motivation to learn.
