Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember going up to the board and showing your fellow students what you have learned? The thrill of being the student who is playing the part of teacher at the board? I want to give my students an opportunity to do this in a 21st century way, by using a slate to project their work!

My students are 3rd graders at a high poverty school in Arizona.

The state of Arizona doesn't give schools much funding, and our budgets are always being cut. Despite this fact, the students and teachers at this school do what they can to support each other so that the students have a chance to succeed. While this community does not have much, I have watched as the school and students pulled together to organize food and blanket drives to help the homeless, sponsored each other with the Christmas Angel project and continuously looked out for one another.

My Project

My students need a Smart Slate to connect to the projector so that they can show their knowledge and become the teacher. The integration of technology in the classroom is essential to cultivate 21st century learners. The new common core standards lean heavily on technology and our class doesn't have much. The school has arranged for a projector, but the students can't interact with a projector alone. By using the slate, students will be able to finish problems, correct sentences and show their thinking, and have it all projected on the board so everyone can see. It helps them to be the teacher!

This impact will allow for technology in the classroom.

With a society that is so heavily technology based and trying to prepare them for jobs that don't even exist yet, I feel I am letting my students down with a lack of technology in our classroom. We have a teacher computer and will soon have a projector. My class gets to visit the tech lab for 1.5 hours every 6 days and most of them don't have computers and/or Internet at home. I want to prepare them for a technology based future!
