Getting Students Interested in History Through Historical Fiction

Help me give my students historical fiction novels to get them interested in history and reading.

My Project

Over the last couple of years, I have been building a classroom library so my students can choose books that pertain to one of the topics that we cover in our history class and read more about it as a part of their independent reading assignment. I don't just want my students to learn about history but to also develop of love of reading. A number of students have asked me if I have any novels or works of fiction. This got me to thinking that I should also look to include works of historical fiction to our classroom library.

I enjoy reading and want my students to develop that passion as well and it starts by getting to choose your own book to read.

I have found a number of good series that my students like and have gone to local used books stores and book fairs to try and complete the series, but some of the series are still missing a few volumes. I am now turning to DonorsChoose and the larger community to try and complete these book series.
