Help me give my students resistance bands to get leaner and stronger with at-home workouts during and after this Covid-19 shutdown to enable them to prepare for the upcoming softball and volleyball seasons.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The student-athletes whom I have the privilege of coaching are awesome. I am the Athletic Director, Softball Coach, and Volleyball Coach at a low-income, inner-city public school. I coach student-athletes from all different backgrounds and skill levels. Our softball and volleyball programs are geared towards making sports, competition, and exercise accessible, attainable, and fun for all of my student-athletes.
The softball and volleyball teams that I coach are eager to learn and improve their skills, and they are up for any challenge that will make the team better and stronger.
My student-athletes do not have many opportunities in their community to participate in different sports, have affordable exercise equipment, or access to a gym (especially now as schools, parks, and gyms are closed.)
My Project
The goal of this project is to fund resistance bands that we can provide for my softball and volleyball student-athletes to use at home during the Covid-19 shutdown. My school is located in the inner-city and services students mainly from low-income households. During these safer-at-home orders, the majority of our students do not have the ability to safely exercise outside of their homes. They have very limited space to work out and prepare for the return to sports, and they do not have access to our school facilities, parks, or gyms. Our school district is currently only allowing virtual practices with our teams, which is understandable for safety but does make it difficult to adequately prepare our teams for a possible season beginning in December. As a coach, I need to be creative with virtual sports practices, but also provide my student-athletes consistent physical activity for their mental health as well. This project will allow me to provide resistance bands for all of my softball and volleyball players to participate, tone their muscles, and prepare them for the upcoming softball and volleyball season.
Providing resistance bands for our student-athletes will allow me to lead zoom workouts where I will teach the students the exercises and proper techniques to condition their bodies at home.
Although the resistance bands cannot replace actual gym equipment, we must be creative in our ways to ensure our athletes are able to prepare for sports and competition. We need to provide our student-athlete population safe alternatives during this time. Implementing this resistance band exercise program into our virtual softball and volleyball practices will teach our student-athletes that they can get similar athletic benefits with different or limited equipment.
