This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“I am a citizen of the world.”--Sylvia Beach
My students are bright and curious and hard-working.
Our school is in San Jose, the unofficial capital of Silicon Valley, considered one of the most affluent areas in the nation. But our school clearly does not share in that affluence. Our students, 85-90% of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, come from working-class and low-income families that struggle financially. This high crime, high poverty, “gang hotspot” with a median household income of $60,000 is only a 15-20 drive from a highly affluent area (where the median household income is $137,000, more than double that of our families) and home to some of the most highly-rated schools in the nation.
Despite these differences, they share at least one thing in common: they are, like so many young people, looking for ways in which the world is relevant to their lives. They want to know how to make a difference now so that the world they inherit is a better, safer place for everyone. I am proud and honored to help them in this quest.
My Project
Our school is the first school in our district to offer AP Seminar. Students have been meeting outside the regular school day to learn and explore. To date, we have had no materials other than what we have been able to find online. These materials will be the first in the classroom library we are building, resources that we will use this year, and in subsequent ones.
The books will help students learn more about how to conduct academic research, and write and present their findings appropriate for an academic audience.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
