Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning, our students come into the classroom and unpack their belongings. With up to 24 children in the room, and all of the furniture and supplies that come with them, space is an issue, and so is the placement of those supplies. My students lack physical space in which to put their materials for the day.

Our school is full with students who are eager to learn and who come to school each day excited for what is to come.

The group of children in our dual language first grade class are diverse, from their ethnicities and their needs, to their individual personalities. Each child is unique and is treated as such. School is not only a place to learn for them, but it is a place to take ownership over things they may not be able to at home. It is a place for our students to feel safe and to feel valued. They have their own supplies, their own books, and, though limited, their own space. For many of them, this is different from their lives outside the school walls. While the first thing we do as a team is to establish our rules, we also come up with ways to make our environment safe and ensure it runs smoothly. In our room, we are a team of individuals, banded together.

My Project

My students need 24 magazine files to use as book bins, 40 composition books, chart paper, and 20 private partitions to create mini offices. With these materials, our children will be able to store their materials on their desks and place what needs to be taken home in their own personal mailboxes. They will have a space to call their own, where they can put their things to find and use them freely. The book bins will allow them to have ownership over their materials and their own learning because they will have access throughout the day. The chart paper will help them record their thoughts during daily five time.

These materials will allow our classroom to be more organized and to run more smoothly.

The children will be taught the routines and the proper way to use this new space, and this will give them the responsibility managing their materials. It will also give them room to showcase their independence as the year progresses
