My kids love using technology, but many of them don't have Internet access at home and don't get to personally use technology on any kind of regular basis in school. Through your generation donations, we've received 6 iPad minis for our classroom. Now we just need some extra accessories!
100% of our students live in poverty and over half of them are English Language Learners (ELL).
Despite the fact that many of them have already lived through struggles I can only imagine facing, they're bright, funny, creative kids, full of ideas and potential. They definitely have the ability to accomplish a lot of great things. We're already putting the iPads we've received through Donors Choose to good use and it's been so fun to see their excitement and enthusiasm as we figure out together how to best use this new technology.
My Project
A few months ago, I was selected as one of the teachers who will help implement blended learning in our district. Blended learning uses technology to provide students with engaging instruction that is personalized to them. Reading levels, learning modalities (audio, visual, tactile etc.), and even languages can be adjusted for each student. One of the problems we've run into during the early stages of implementation is how noisy the classroom can get when everyone is watching videos or listening to a podcast. While some of my students always have earbuds on them, many of them don't. I'd like to have a handful of headphones that are always available in the classroom. Because we'll also be using some apps and programs that require students recording themselves, I'd love to have headphones with microphones.
The district I work in is, like many urban districts, extremely diverse.
Students speak different languages, come from different cultures, and have many different experiences, and family situations. And like all people, they have different strengths, needs, and interests. I'm excited to find new ways to use technology to shore up areas of individual needs while nurturing individual interests and passions. While it may seem small, these headphones will be important tools in our changing classroom.
