My students need 35 copies of Your Inner Fish to extend their understanding of the mechanisms that drive evolution.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. T.'s classroom raised $502
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students rarely have the challenge of reading a nonfiction work dealing with science topics. Your Inner Fish will challenge and entertain the students, while helping them grasp concepts fundamental to our curriculum.
About 75% of the students at my rural school in North Carolina are on the federal lunch program.
There simply is not a lot of money in the area. These kids will never buy a work of non-fiction or most likely any book. They do work hard and demonstrate a real curiosity about science. Many of our kids are great students who can read and comprehend above grade level. If you visited our class, you would feel their enthusiasm for learning.
My Project
If you have not read Neil Shubin's "Your Inner Fish" - read it! This book about evolution is very readable and quite enjoyable. He enthusiastically describes paleontology field research and the way his discoveries fit into our greater understanding of evolution and its mechanisms. The way the book is written will change my student's perspective of science books. His book will provide a unique view of evolution for my students and will help them tie together concepts learned in science classes throughout their middle school experience.
After reading this book students will create their own "transition" animal like Tiktaalik. They will explain how the animal adapted to its environment. In the spring students will have a chance to apply the lessons about field work when we go on our own fossil hunt.
Incorporating this text into the students' study of evolution will make the topic more fun and enjoyable.
8th graders, like most people, find work more enjoyable when it is fun and entertaining. Reading "Your Inner Fish" will prove entertaining and students will think building a transition animal is fun. ALSO, careful management of these books means future students will also benefit from their purchase.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
