My students are predominantly African American in a Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school. There are about 350 students that I see each week. The school is located in a very low socioeconomic inner city neighborhood. About 99% of my students receive free lunch. It is a Title I school and it is also one of the 14 schools that are in the Transformation Zone which means that the school is working on improving their school performance score.
My school is very involved with its students.
They have created mentoring programs, provided after school tutoring, and participate in the Amazing Shakes where students go through multiple rounds of interviews in a competition that teaches you social skills that they will be able to use in the real world. Our school motto is called the The Big Four: Respectful to all, Obedient to school rules, Achieve our highest potential, and be Responsible for our own actions.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." --Albert Einstein
Student involvement in school music has a positive impact on other areas of their lives. Musical involvement improves a student’s self-discipline, dexterity, coordination, self-esteem, thinking skills, listening skills, creative abilities and personal expression. There have been a number of studies done on the effect of music on academic development which all have positive outcomes for students. When students get on the drums, they feel excited and proud. In previous years we have borrowed marching drums from other schools for special programs, but it would be awesome to have our own set of marching snares at the school so students could practice all year. Please help with your donation so that our students can receive all the benefits of music in their lives.
