No matter what we do, "we just don't get along." "We can't work together." "We can't sit together because we don't like each other."
My students are an absolutely wonderful group of youngsters who are eager to learn.
However, they come from a neighborhood that is being attacked frequently by gangs and come from broken homes, so unfortunately, all they know is to fight. These students come from poor circumstances and ninety percent receive either free or reduced lunches. With their nutrition needs being met, if we can teach them how to get along, their lives would improve even more.
My Project
I would like to be able to teach my students about working together and teamwork by using a 2 octave set of Suzuki Tone Chimes. By using music to show them how working together can create music, I strongly feel they will learn the importance of working together to achieve their dreams and goals. This is also an excellent way to teach students how to read music and express emotion through song. Being able to work together will also help them be able to perform together in front of an audience.
These students are living a life riddled by fighting and not getting along.
I would love the chance to use music as a way to connect their lives and teach them that violence does not solve problems. By showing them they can work together, we may be able to make a change in one student who may not join a gang because of the impact music has made in their life.
