Getting Mathematicians Fired Up With Amazon Fire!

My students need two Amazon Fire tablets with corresponding kid-proof cases to use during guided math.

My Students

My students are from Brockton, the City of Champions! They are overly excited about everything new and love to learn through hands-on discovery. Most of them come to school with a smile and a story to tell each morning. Throughout the day, they work hard to achieve our daily goals, both academically and behaviorally.

However, these mini champions face a lot of challenges on their pathways to success and higher learning.

Almost all of them receive free or reduced lunch, and we all eat breakfast in the classroom every morning to ensure each child has a healthy start to the day. They may not have the materials they need at home to complete projects and assignments, or perhaps they do not even have a home to go to when school ends for the day.

Our district has consistently lost funding at the state level over the past few years. The upcoming year will be no different with cuts having been made across the board which will affect our students in serious ways. My goal is to ensure my students have the materials and tools they need to grow into the champions they are meant to be!

My Project

This year I am excited to be starting Guided Math in my classroom. Similar to Guided Reading, Guided Math will allow me to work with small groups of students every day to focus on the skills and learning they need at their instructional levels. Instructing students in small groups will be more important than ever this year as budget cuts have increased our class sizes to 30 students at the primary level! Small groups will be the only way to reach this many students effectively.

While teaching in small groups is by far the best way to meet students' needs, it can be difficult for students to remain engaged when they are not working with the teacher.

Guided math will allow students to engage in real learning independently in different activities around the room during our three small group rounds. Technology is a big component of Guided Math, and these two Amazon Fire tablets will provide my classroom with the opportunity to have 7-8 students engaged in math technology during our Guided Math block every round. That is around 24 students each day! Wow!

My students will be able to visit math websites, use math apps, and engage in our district's math programs by working with the Amazon Fire tablets. Please consider donating to this project as I start a new mathematical journey with some excited first graders. Thank you.
