My students need a comfortable learning environment that will help engage them in the learning process using newly acquired technology for our first year going 1:1 in a gifted and Advanced Placement classroom.
My kids are all 14-16 year olds in the 10th grade. Each student is either identified as Academically Gifted and/or Talented or has opted into the rigorous adventure of taking an Advanced Placement course for college credit. They are very diverse both ethnically and socioeconomically, but all have this great potential I hope to tap into each year. Many travel quite a distance to get to school, having to ride transfer buses or are dependent on their parents or peers to get to school as Gifted services do not always provide transportation out of our attendance zone. Many are still dealing with the 2017 flood, having their home still in disrepair and living, at times, in hotels and FEMA trailers almost a year after the storm of August hit our community. This school is within East Baton Rouge Parish, but outside of the city limits. It is a Title I school, having a majority of its students on Free and Reduced lunch. These kids are awesome and have the potential to do amazing things if given the right tools and environment to learn and be challenged.
My Project
I am requesting funding for technology assistance products and classroom comfort products. As my students work on becoming familiar with having a 1:1 classroom, I want them to become comfortable in their learning environment. I have requested funding for the following: (2) futons to take the place of student desks, (2) stand up laptop desks, (10) lap top desk stands, (6) lap desks, (15) subscriptions to the NYT Upfront periodical.
These technology and comfort materials will boost student morale in class, create an environment in which they are comfortable and more willing to participate and be themselves within a highly rigorous curriculum.
The futons will be used to create comfort corner and keep students engaged and on task with lap desks for their new Chromebooks that our school will have in our inaugural 1:1 year! A class set of laptop desk stands for those students that are more comfortable typing in an ergonomic position will allow for my students to easily have a comfortable experience with their new Chromebooks in class. The availability of the stand up desks will allow for my ADHD kids to be able to be a part of class and still fidget, move and stand if needed while being engaged in learning. I am also requesting subscriptions to NYT Upfront current event magazine for students to better engage them with news directly related to Government and Politics, having students engage in discussions concerning the world and its leaders using an easy student friendly format.
I feel that if I make my classroom more like a place my kids want to be rather than look and feel like an institution, they will be more willing to be a part of the learning journey as well as put their best effort in all aspects of class.
