My Students

"Why are we here?" is what I always ask my second grade students everyday. They always answer with a resounding, "To do our best and learn something new!" as they enter my class with smiles on their tiny faces.

Our elementary school has a high number of students who are first generation immigrants from Haiti.

I teach two groups of second grade classes; one group has ESE/special needs children and the other has some who are gifted.

In September, our school community was badly affected by Hurricane Irma's destruction, resulting in the basic amenities that my students need to prosper and succeed, not always readily available.

Even though we have to cater for and adapt to such a diverse range of learning needs, we strongly believe that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology. As their second grade reading, math, language arts, social studies and science teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences, especially when it pertains to their learning environment.

My Project

Our school is embarking to be designated officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school and as a result, technology has now infiltrated every aspect of how our classes are taught.

After Hurricane Irma struck, most students came back with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they needed to be successful.

Even with limited resources, using manipulatives in my classroom has proved to be quite a success as the students learn quickly, discover and enjoy every lesson while developing scientific exploration, analytical and critical math skills.

I am requesting math and science manipulative kits which will be used for STEAM center activities. My students need to experience hands-on activities in the form of conducting experiments, building and exploring real life math and science concepts and using their senses. Currently, my classroom is very limited in terms of manipulative resources, as I share what is available with four other teachers.

We are aiming to become a STEAM school in the upcoming school year and having our students get to explore and discover math, engineering and science outside of reading a book or going on the Internet, would be priceless.
