My students need 2 ladybug kits, 1 live butterfly garden, 1 butterfly larvae kit, 1 praying mantis habitat and praying mantis egg sacks and 1 magic rock kit.
One of the best ways to learn is through hands-on learning. This learning allows them to make connections as they learn. I want to do this through purchasing caterpillars, ladybugs, and praying mantises to help them understand the process of life cycles.
I teach at a Title l school where 93 percent of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of my students do not have access to things outside of their house and the small community around them. They have not had real life experiences that expose them to other than what they read in books. These experiences will help them expand their vocabulary and their knowledge of the world around them. It will also help them make hands-on connections to what we are studying in science.
My Project
The life cycle kits are a great hands-on way to help my students make connections to the life cycles. We have read books about the different life cycles in our teacher directed reading and in our small guided reading groups. I am requesting a ladybug land kit, a live butterfly garden, 2 butterfly larvae kits and a praying mantis habitat and two egg sacks. My students would be able to keep a log recording of the life cycle of our different insects and amphibians. This would also help with our non-fiction text features as they provide illustrations, diagrams and labels about the life cycles. My students have not had the experience of watching real insects and amphibians go through the process of the life cycle. They are very excited at the thought of having these kits in our classroom. We will use our magic rock kit and our space sand during our science time.
By purchasing these kits for our classroom you can help my students expand their experiences.
They will be able to observe and study each life cycle and compare the different life cycles. Studying these hands-on life cycles will help them make connections that they will never forget.
