This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walking through the halls of our high school is one of the most life-giving experiences I have ever had. The energy is contagious: boisterous laughter, adamant debate, and ever-varying speeds of students hustling to class or trying to get one more individualized handshake in. Teachers stand at doorways and greet students individually with questions about their families, the game last night, or following up on specific assignments--interactions that instill energy and hope in students and teachers alike. However, due to COVID 19, currently the hallways are empty, and will remain so until we can safely return to school.

Now more than ever, it is essential that we support our teachers in cultivating their emotional resilience in order to be able to effectively support students and families throughout our community.

While my project will benefit students ultimately, my target audience is our teaching staff. According to the National Education Association, "In urban districts, [...] close to 50 percent of newcomers leave the profession during their first five years of teaching" (http://www.nea.org/tools/17054.htm). Thus, it is absolutely essential that we offer resources to empower and strengthen our teachers' emotional resilience so that they stay in the classroom, particularly during these complex times.

My Project

Throughout classrooms, businesses, and athletic programs, "grit" has become one of the most popular buzzwords. In order for teachers to be able to partner with students in strengthening their determination and ability to overcome adversity, educators must be supported in their own mental health and perseverance. Therefore, within my role as an instructional coach, (a teacher of teachers), I am excited to work with 12 of our staff members to opt into a book study of "Onward: Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Educators" by Elena Aguilar.

By exploring the reading throughout the school year and discussing our takeaways together, we will not only strengthen ourselves individually, but also strengthen our community.

Our book study will be an essential step in ensuring that our teachers feel comfortable and supported in the classroom and therefore stay in the profession, in turn creating classroom environments that are welcoming and increasing our teacher retention, quality, and skill.
