This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Several of our students have been suffering learning loss brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery has been slow. This has affected their reading skills as well - many students missed out on formative instruction time when they were younger and now read below grade level.
Graphic novels are a fantastic way to help combat learning loss brought on by the pandemic or other factors.
These books have simple, broken-up text instead of paragraphs, and tons of visual clues in the artwork for struggling readers. For older students especially, reading "cool" graphic novels builds their reading skills in a way that doesn't make them feel babyish or behind.
Our shopping list contains titles for a variety of students, with diverse characters as well as tie-ins to popular franchises. It is our hope that boosting the graphic novel section with new and interesting books will help our students not only practice their reading skills, but continue their journey to be life-long learners.
